Strength in Munster

Mods and Minis choose Liam’s Lodge as their Charity of the Year for 2014

Mods and Minis have chosen Liam’s Lodge as their charity of the year for 2014.  Liams Lodge was founded by Tony and Mary Heffernan from Keel, Co. Kerry. It will be Ireland’s first National Respite Centre which will cater for children suffering from genetic and rare disorders and will be located in Blennerville, Co. Kerry.

This is a great synergy as both Liams Lodge and Mods and Minis have their roots in both Cork and Kerry. Mods and Minis have two stores in Cork in Mallow and Wilton, two in Kerry in Killarney and one in Ennis Co. Clare.  Mary Heffernan hails from Kenmare Co. Kerry while Tony is from Cork and his grandfather is from Co. Clare, making this the perfect Munster partnership.

Liams Lodge will eventually cater for over 1500 families a year.  Tony and Mary Heffernan know what it is like to look after highly dependent children.  Both of their children, Saoirse and Liam were born with Batten Disease, a rare and fatal neurological condition.  Saoirse sadly passed away in 2011, aged 5 and Liam is currently living with Batten Disease.

Thousands of parents, from every community in Ireland, face similar challenges from the wide range of genetic and rare disorders, some of which are severely debilitating, while others are life-limiting.

The loving staff at Liams Lodge will provide the best standard of care for its special guests, allowing Mom and Dad to take a break, relax, or perhaps spend quality time with their other children, who often get forgotten about due to their siblings needs.  The on-site training facilities will provide training required to allow care givers and professional care providers the insight needed to care for children with genetic and rare disorders and the often complex care needs of the child.

As Tony and Mary know, a respite break is vital recharge the batteries and give the whole family some time together in a relaxed and safe environment that understands their situation and needs.

Tony and Mary said “We are delighted that Liams Lodge has been chosen as the Mods and Minis Charity of the Year for 2014, this is a fantastic opportunity that allows children to help other children”.

Mods and Minis was set up by Deirdre and Thomas McCloskey in 2004. The McCloskey’s, who live in Killarney are passionate about supporting local initiatives and are delighted to be able to support Liam’s Lodge.

Children’s clothing is more than just clothes to the team at Mods and Minis. Children are allowed the freedom to express their personalities through the clothes they wear and the lines carried in the Mods and Mini’s shops combine durability with fashion, which is a must when your mission is to explore the great big world out there.

Thomas and Deirdre said “This is a perfect match for our brand. We are delighted that we can expose our loyal customers to Liam’s Lodge and all the good work being done by the charity. We look forward to a successful and fun-filled year ahead with the team at Liam’s Lodge”.
